We won't be making a habit of doing this, but this little bit of news is too juicy to ignore. HL2Central have posted up an interview with Gabe Newall today. He answers a few questions, but the one of most interest is this:

[HL2Central] Will half-life2 comes with a light-version of softimage|xsi?

   [Gabe Newell] Yes.


Valve had hinted at this before, but this is direct confirmation, which is lovely user posted image

It's also been pointed out to me that a free version of Softimage|XSI is already available in the form of an educational version. There are many limits but it's a good place to start learning the basics until the tool kit is released in August.

Note: The educational version is limited on its save options, and there is a good chance that the version that comes with Half-Life 2 won't read that format -- so don't start producing mod content with it just yet.
