Ludumdare 9 is taking place this coming weekend (Apr. 28 & 29). Ludumdare is a 48 hour game development competition. Contestants are given 48 hours to create an original game based on the selected theme. The game must be constructed from code, art, sound, and other resources made during the duration of the competition. What is special about LD9 is that it is being hosted here at Wavelength. We are welcoming anyone to come compete, as it is a fun time to interact and create a few neat games. Themes are being voted upon now, so join up on IRC and register to the site.

Where do we go from here - posted by Bulk

As you may or may not have noticed, TWL has been super quite of late. This due to many things, not least of which is my lack of time to develop the site further. Well Im developing websites for a living now, so I think I'm at the point where I can re-code TWL with out too much trouble.
However, the real question is not could I, it's should I. I am certainly not going to take the site or content down, but should I do more?
TWL, in the Half-Life world at least, is more or less defunct. With the Valve wiki, and other more active communities/sites out there, is it really worth my time to recode TWL? And if it was worth my time, what would it include features wise? The only way TWL will expand and grow in the current community is to re-focus.
Should TWL become even MORE community oriented? We could offer SVN accounts to mod developers, 'blogs for teams or individuals, private forums for them to communicate… all sorts of cool stuff. Or is it not worth it? Does anyone (who still visits this site) care?
Well this is your chance to influence TWL's future. There is a forum post here, where you can post your views (for and against re-development). If no one posts, or no one seems that enthused, I'll have my answer and TWL as you see it now will likely remain this way for many years to come. If people are interested in a better TWL, I'll do all I can to make it happen. I can't promise it'll be ready tomorrow of course, but I can give it a go.
It's up to you.

MechMod Souce Code Released - posted by grOOvy

MechMod, was a popular Half-Life 1 modification which had shut down almost a year ago. After two years of development and achieving an alpha release, the entire source code has now been released to the public. The Open Source initiative is a brilliant one, and helps community programmers to learn from each other’s projects. MechMod’s source code is now freely available to download from the SourceForge Network under the Open Source License (version 3.0).
The mod features many visual effects (including usage of pixel shaders for blurring, glows and realistic water) which were considered revolutionary at it's time of release, as the same were achieved on the Half-Life 1 engine. Some of the other systems that the mod implemented from scratch include classes, teams, animation, particles, custom scores, HUD display, VGUI menus loaded from JPEG format, flying movement with boosters, a basic melee system, and a vareity of different weapon types.

Bit quiet round here - posted by Bulk

Maybe it's a cycle Wavelength goes through - maybe its a cycle ALL sites that are run in peoples spare time goes through. I don't know. At any rate things have gotten very quiet around here both on the article submission side and the general staff level side. It doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon either. That isn't to say Wavelength is going to shut down anytime soon. As long as I can afford to pay the bills TWL will be here! If I ever actually get any spare time maybe I'll get around to the program the fully automated community system I've always imagined. Perhaps. With the new official Valve wiki there isn't much point to a site like Wavelength anymore...
Ay any rate, for now the only place you will find much in the way of activity here are the forums.

Whats Bulk been doing? - posted by Bulk

Weeeeeel for the past 6 months I've been setting up a company called Actor's CV with a group of friends. The reason I've been so quiet around here is I've been putting all my time and effort in to creating the backend system to run the company. I have no doubt that the nature of the business is of little to no interest to the majority of people here, but on the off chance someone is interested then every little bit of publicity helps! :)
The site is essentially an automated system of actors to put their CV (resume, for the yanks), credits, vital stats etc online easily. They enter all their details in a series of forms, chose from one of a bunch of pre-made templates and the system renders their data using their chosen template & makes it available online via their chosen domain. It's all pretty nifty if I don't say so my self. So anyway, if you happen to know any actors (we're pretty much aiming at the UK only at this point, but I'm pretty sure someone outside the UK could sign up ok) then please spread the word :D.
We're also setting up a forum for entertainment industry chat etc, so if your interested in that sort of thing, feel free to register over there (links at the bottom).
We've not actually done any advertising in the UK yet (they come out in about 3 weeks) so the forum is a little barren atm, but we're hoping things will pick up soon once people actually know about it.
Before you start to panic, I'm not quitting this site or anything. The core system I created for Actor's CV was written to be pretty flexible, and I intend to use it as a launching point for Project Falcon (TWL 4.0), at this point I probably won't be starting work on it for another month or two, but you've waited this long etc etc ;)

Enjoy :)

Over at pixelgames.com, we are looking for any custom maps for Counter-Strike Source that we can sort through to feature in custom map ladders. We have two options here and we need the communities help.
-We will be needing maps to sort through. If your a mapper, this is a great chance to get your map in on the action. Or if your a gamer and have a favorite, send it our way and we will check it out. We are accepting any and all maps. To submit a map just goto our website ( http://www.pixelgames.com ) and scroll to 'Community' on the above menu and click on 'Submit File'.
-We could also use a few helping hands sorting through the maps. If your like us and like testing out maps then just send and email over to brian [at] pixelgames.com and we can sort something out.
Please help us out in this new project!
